Voodoo Rising

Out on the levee,
right before dawn,
I heard a quiet rumble
that came and then was gone.

As the darkness faded,
surrendered to the light,
I had a funny feeling
everything was not all right

First the moon slipped into shadow
then the shadow slipped away,
as the dawn came out of hiding
and stepped out into the day.
What once was a simple secret
nearly everyone could see;
there was nothing in this world
but you and me:

Voodoo rising in the world,
like an oyster births a pearl.
Voodoo rising, can’t you see?
Washing over you and me.
